The Kwara State House of Assembly, Ilorin, has passed a motion to address growing insecurity in the state, citing concerns over terrorist activities, banditry and kidnapping.
The motion, moved by a representative of Ilorin Central, Alhaji Oba Abdulkadir during the house plenary session, highlighted the need for urgent actions to protect lives and property in the state.
Alhaji Abdulkadir noted that the peaceful nature of Kwara State is being threatened by criminal elements, particularly in Baruten, Kaiama axis, and recently in Oke-Ero Local Government Area.
He expressed sadness over the loss of lives, displacement of residents, and destruction of farmlands caused by these perpetrators.
“Terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements are now freely tormenting fellow Kwarans, particularly in the Baruten and Kaiama axis, and recently, in Oke -Ero Local Government Areas leading to loss of lives, displacement of residents, destruction of farm lands and general disruption of socio-economic activities, creating an atmosphere of panic and instability.
“Kidnapping is fast becoming alarming taking into consideration the recent case of Director personnel Management and the Director of the Legal Department of Oke-Ero, Local Government Area.
“If these security threats are not addressed with the required urgency that they deserve, they may escalate and have spiral effect of the ugly scenario, which may lead to overall destabilization of the age long peace the State is known for,” he said.
Other law makers who spoke on the salient issue also called for proactive and deliberate measures to restore confidence, safeguard communities, and reclaim lands from the grip of terror and uncertainty.
They acknowledged the State Governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq efforts in implementing strategic initiatives to reduce insecurity rate, emphasising his remarkable leadership and dedication through numerous collaborations with stakeholders in the security sector.
Citing the governor’s recent visit to one of the most affected areas and provisions of 150 motorcycles to security agencies, the House urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to direct Kwara State Security Council to review and strengthen security measures across the state.
In a resolution read by the Speaker, Engineer Yakubu Danladi Salihu, they called for increased deployment of security personnel and logistics to affected areas.
Speaking further, the lawmakers proposed establishing a Victim Support Fund to assist families displaced by terrorism and to aid in rebuilding affected communities.
They also recommended security awareness campaigns and prompt reporting of suspicious activities through collaboration between the Ministry of Communication and traditional institutions.
