The Customs Area Controller, CAC, Seme Area Command, Comptroller Ben Oramalugo has emphasised the role of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in national development at the 5th session of the Redeemer’s University International Model United Nations (RUIMUN) Conference.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Command’s Spokesman CSC Isa Suleiman on Tuesday.

According to the statement, Comptroller Oramalugo highlighted trade facilitation, revenue generation, Anti-smuggling activities and National security as key roles of Customs, while speaking on the theme, “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations”.

The Customs expert highlighted the roles to include- Trade Facilitation: Simplifying customs processes to enhance legitimate trade and economic growth; Revenue Generation- Contributing significantly to national revenue, with the NCS generating over ₦6 trillion last year; Anti-smuggling and National Security-Preventing the entry of prohibited and harmful goods while collaborating with other agencies to safeguard the nation.

On Global Standards & Best Practices, Comptroller Ben referenced the Arusha Declaration and other international conventions, emphasizing their role in enhancing customs integrity, harmonizing procedures, and combating illicit activities.

He equally emphasized the importance of integrity, patriotism, and the harmful effects of smuggling on the economy and society.

To him, smuggling can have severe consequences, including health and safety risks associated with fake drugs, second-hand clothing, used tires, and other un-customs goods.

Economic Impact of Smuggling- Comptroller Oramalugo highlighted the need to support local industries, citing Nigeria’s status as a leading rice producer. He noted that failing to buy local rice can harm domestic factories.

Dangers of Smuggling- He warned about the risks of smuggled goods, including fake drugs, second-hand clothing, and used tires, which can pose severe health and safety risks.

While fielding questions from journalists at the event, Dr. Oramalugo lauded the leadership style of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, describing him as “the best CGC in Africa.”

He commended the CGC’s numerous achievements and recognitions, including “Outstanding Revenue Collection” Award by the Nigeria President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and the recent Sun Newspaper’s “Best Public Service of the Year” award.

Dr. Oramalugo expressed his gratitude to Redeemer’s University for the opportunity to engage with young leaders and enlighten them on the vital contributions of the Nigeria Customs Service to national progress.

The conference which is slated for 3rd to 6th March 2025, provided a platform for insightful discussions on global development and nation-building.
